Here are some of our efforts in the past to raise awareness and donations for Breast Cancer. I hope after looking you'll be inspired to join us for the walking event this October or with a donation in support. Thank you.
Before I discovered Making Strides with the American Cancer Society, I was a top fundraiser and volunteer for Susan G. Komen’s Race for the Cure in Oregon and Southwest Washington.I participated in the Race for the Cure from 2006 to 2014, becoming the male face of breast cancer in our community. I graced the covers of a few PR TV spots, appeared in newspaper articles, and even had a write-up in an Australian weekly, The Macarthur Advertiser, featuring a celebrity and breast cancer patient from Sydney.
In 2014, I achieved the honor of being the top individual fundraiser for Susan G. Komen’s Race for the Cure, and my reward was a pair of diamond earrings—a rather modest gesture.
After a month-long trip to Australia as guests of YAPstuf.org, a breast cancer organization dedicated to educating young people about the risks of breast cancer, I felt I was ready to expand my involvement towards raising awareness. I applied for a community outreach position with the American Cancer Society, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, in our local Portland region. My previous experiences with breast cancer had earned me an interview, but unfortunately, they were hesitant to transition from a 30-something female to a 40-something male breast cancer survivor.
A few weeks after learning that I didn’t get the position with ACS, I received a call from the person I had interviewed with. They asked me if I would be interested in helping launch a program called ”Real Men Wear Pink.” I agreed and found a new mission. In the first year of Real Men, I helped spread the word and became the top individual fundraiser for ACS Making Strides Against Breast Cancer in 2015. Now, 10 years later, the Real Men program is thriving, raising awareness and substantial donations for our mission. They’re fantastic!
I’m sharing this story because I’m once again fundraising for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. It would mean a lot to me if you could make a small donation to the American Cancer Society, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.
Thank you.
